Description
Semporna boasts numerous islands, and hidden among them are two renowned for their underwater wonderlands. The distinctive overwater bungalows are perfect for capturing memorable photos, while the enchanting marine life encountered during snorkelling is even more captivating. Embark on an enthralling snorkelling journey here and immerse yourself in the dreamlike underwater realm.
Welcome to Mabul Island & Kapalai Island!
Mabul Island is a magnificent heaven nestled within an archipelago. A mere 45-minute speedboat ride from Semporna transports you to this mystical island. Mabul Island is a mere 15-minute speedboat journey from Sipadan Island, renowned as the "Aquarium of God", yet boasts a vastly different natural landscape in such close proximity.
Today, Mabul Island hosts two water resorts. As you leisurely stroll along the wooden bridges of these overwater retreats, you'll find beautiful corals and vibrant schools of fish beneath you. If you decide to set foot on the island, you'd realize that every corner is a picture-perfect moment waiting to capture. The azure sea, vibrant blooms, and unique overwater house serve as delightful subjects for your photography. While half of the island is dedicated to resorts, the other half is home to the Bajau, the world's last sea nomads. Known as sea gypsies, they seamlessly integrate with the island's resorts, together painting the unique scenery of Semporna, where indigenous culture merges with coastal beauty. Exploring around the island, you can feel the ancient fishing and hunting traditions passed down through millennia, alongside a deep reverence and respect for nature.
Kapalai Island, it is actually not an island but a sandbar near Sipadan and Mabul islands. Once adorned with wild flora, it evolved into a sandbar through the erosion of land by the sea. Today, the sandbar is globally recognized for the water bungalows built upon it. It's noteworthy that the deep seabed is home to some fascinating marine creatures like Butterfly Fish, Trumpet Fish, Emperor Fish, Sickle Fish, and more. Whether or not you'll encounter them depends entirely on luck. At considerable expense, an artificial sandy beach was constructed on this "island," which lacks natural sandy beaches, to provide a safe nesting ground for turtles.
While snorkelling, the waters surrounding Mabul and Kapalai islands unveil a mesmerising dream-like scene where schools of colourful tropical fish can be observed weaving in and out of the coral. The underwater landscape is magnificently stunning, with crystal-clear waters and a rich, diverse ecosystem. With luck on your side, encounters with butterfly fish, turtles, rays, and other marine creatures are possible, as they gracefully navigate their underwater realms, sharing the wonders of this oceanic paradise with you.
Here, you can savour the unique maritime culture, the majestic seascapes, and the delightful experience of harmonious coexistence with nature. Whether meandering between the overwater house, listening to the rhythmic lapping of waves, or snorkelling in the vast ocean, exploring the secrets of coral formations, you'll be deeply touched and moved.
Amidst this maritime utopia, Mabul and Kapalai islands present an unforgettable snorkelling journey!
